What are the elements that we can monitor in datacenter?

  • Hardware Health using SNMP Trap (like HP Insight Manager). - Send Alerts.
  • Monitor Websites, FTP links, Database Connections.
  • Monitor Network Traffic (Objectplanet Network probe, Solarwind Engineering Toolkits)
  • File Server Size
  • Drive Space (olden days? *)
  • Temperature in various locations
  • Switches/Firewall logs using SNMP (may using Kiwi Syslog)
  • Storage Health
  • Storage Traffic, Hot Spot (ManageEngine OpStor, Solarwind Storage Profiler)
  • Storage Size (you may use storage virtual provisioning)
  • Ping Servers (May use Nagios)
  • Web Statistic
  • Backup Status (Report)
  • Exchange Mailbox Size
  • Database Size (take action before it fills the drive /LUN)
  • Applications + Tire Architecture with database
  • Services
  • Active Directory Audit
  • Event Logs (Windows)
  • Performance Metrics
  • var/log - Linux
  • Applications Logs **
  • Database Logs **
  • UPS Battery

 and yet to add more..

* In VMware VM, you may expand the the VMDK file on demand and using diskpart expand the hard drive size. Even you may scrip it using PowerCLI / SDK / C#. All based on requirement.

 

** You may configure to read the logs periodically if "critical" status "send email' using scrip and scheduler job.
