How to install Apache web server in Linux?

Create a directory to install the Apache first. Here I am creating /app/httpd directory.

As per your company standard you may need to have separate mount or separate HDD or virtual HDD for /app. In my case I use to have separate virtual HDD for /app and mount it. I will post another article for how to create proper mount for /app.

This sample command key strokes shows by creating directory to install apache.

In this sample lets assume you downloaded httpd-2.2.17.tar already and kept in /tmp directory.

You can use wget command to download from web or WinSCP tool to transfer from windows computer or scp comnad to copy from another Linux box.

  •
    • mkdir /apps
    • mkdir /apps/httpd
    • cp /tmp/httpd-2.2.17.tar /apps/httpd
    • tar -xvf httpd-2.2.17.tar
    • cd httpd-2.2.17
    • $./configure --prefix=/apps/httpd/
    • $ make
    • $ make install
    • edit /apps/httpd/conf/httpd.conf with Server Name to listen to -- Use vi editor. Explained bellow,
    • $ /apps/httpd/bin/apachectl start
  •

To edit the httpd.conf file with your server as mentioned in bellow sample:

vi /apps/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

# ServerName...

ServerName your-linux-server-name:80

Now type in browser http://your-linux-server-name

You should get "It Works!" message; this mean your installation is good!
